Kinja'd!!!

Well, as the title says, I'm going car shopping tomorrow. Don't know if i'll buy tomorrow, but hopefully I'll find something I love. Finally, I will be seen in a car that shows who I am; and not in a blue minivan that screams soccer mom(still fun too hoon in believe it or not). So far, here is what I'm looking for:

Subaru impreza

Ford Focus

Mazda 3 hatchback/ mazdaspeed 3

VW GTI

honda civi type r

VW Jetta Sportwagon

Ford mustang

Subaru BRZ/scion FRS

Volvo V50, V60, S40

—————- all theses cars must meet these requirements for me to consider buying———-

-7-20k available to spend, used, and not to costly to maintain. So Audi's and post 2000 BMW's are out.

-Newer than 2000. willing to consider pre 2000 if it's something jalop worthy. e.g:bmw e30, nissan 240, etc.

-Under a 100,000 miles

-at least 19mpg in the city.

-Black, Grey, White, or some similar color. nothing bright, trying to avoid getting pulled over.

-hatchback, coupe, or wagon, willing to consider a sedan. Must seat 4 or 5 people.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Update

———————————————————————————————————————————————————

So i've narrowed down what cars I'm looking at, and I've found some good ones to consider.

-Volvo s40 ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

-infinity g35( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) or a g37 if I find a good one

-VW GTI, Mazda speed 3 hatchback, Subaru Impreza hatchback (still looking for one of these)

I think the previous generation S60s meet your criteria. Turbo 5 powered AWD sedan with a six speed and Brembos, and I believe you can pick them up in your price range.

Honda S2000. I didn't consider it at first either in my most recent car search, but it is the best performance car you can buy for your price range

Keep an eye out for a Saab 9-2x Aero which is just a badge engineered WRX. Same mechanically but nicer interior.

Also you really should consider the E46 3 series. While it will have higher maintenance costs than some you can get a really nice one for 10-12k still which leaves you some cash for future maintenance.

All of them are quite powerful and Swedish, and therefore Jalop worthy.

Not sure any of these meet your MPG requirement, but all can be had for a lot less than 14k.

Everyday is a car shopping day with the power of www.craigslist.org !

amirite???

Also, what aboot a Volvo C30? Best looking hatch ever, plus they're turbo five cylinders! I wish they made an AWD version but that would be too perfect :/

edit: Kinja decided to make the hyperlink for " www.craigslist.com " direct to " http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/www.craigslist… " - wutttt

WS6 Trans Am, GTO, 240SX (always an option), SAAB 9-2X, SRT4 Neon if you're weird (joke, no offense Skittle owners), Jetta GLI VR6, Volvo V70R, Legacy GT (Maybe even B spec). I'm sure I'm missing something.

My vote goes to a nice lil Impreza WRX. No bias here, nope.

Is this a first car or??

I would honestly go Focus. I had a 02 back in the day. It took abuse like a champ, was quick and reliable, and $20 seemed to make it go forever. Frankly it seems like the only car in your price range that will fill all your needs. I see some svts floating around occasionally.

No.

I made that mistake. Cost me $3900 in maintenance in the first two months of ownership. Then the heater broke...on an 11 hour drive from Pittsburgh to CT...during a freaking blizzard. I brought the car in to fix the heater, and was given a quote of $1300. Then there was an additional quote for $1900 to fix the inexplicably split rear suspension coils, broken window motors, and faulty check engine light sensor. And of course a set of tires would cost $800.

I didn't bother to having any of those quoted repairs fixed. I sold the POS and couldn't be happier. Break My Wallet.

WS6 Trans Am - lots of power for this amount of money, but test drove one and it felt sloppy and I felt like a complete redneck.

Save your money. Fill the needs you have as cheaply and efficiently as possible (Focus). Beat the living crap out of it. Learn from your mistakes. Keep saving money. Buy what you really want in a year or 2. Trust me.

I've already done that with the minivan. So this is sorta a car that I really want. But i'm gonna keep a limit on it and buy something even better latter down the road.

I had an 00 323i. Probably only spent $1000 on it in 3 years of owning it. Never had a thing go wrong with it other than normal maintenance, and I did that all myself.

Didn't realize this was a first car. Skip all of these cars. Buy a beater for less than $3k. Honda CRX, Mazda Miata, E30, Dodge Neon, something cheap enough to be almost considered disposable. Then spend 6 months or a year working on it, change the brakes, the struts, the oil, the coolant, really learn how to drive stick well. Etc etc etc, get confident working on cars on a car that if even if you really fuck it up somehow who really cares it was cheap to begin with. Then go out and buy yourself a new car. This will save you thousands upon thousands of dollars over your lifetime.

If you're willing to go a little (a.k.a quite a lot) older, you can get a Mercedes-Benz 300TD wagon. These are well known for reliability, and the parts support is above average for a vehicle of its age. It's fuel efficient, and if your example has the optional 3rd row, you can carry 7 people. Prices usually range from $7k to $15k.

With $15k, you can buy three NA/NB Miatas, which means you can "seat" 6 people.

That money isn't buying some of the cars on that list.

And some of the others aren't worth considering, imo.

With that kind of money, I'm buying a 04-06 GTO or E46 330i, hands down. Out of your list, I'd buy the GTI.

I'll admit it, I'm aiming rely high in hopes of finding some of the cars, like the BRZ or FRS for example. But who knows. They're just cars to consider, or at least drool over while i'm looking.
